The City

MonThology: an incredible collaborative project

I want to take a few to share the news about this amazing project I have the privilege to be part of. A group of fifty (50!) speculative fiction writers are creating a world together. Take a minute to try to wrap your head around that glorious chaos.

Go ahead and take another to imagine how much fun we’re having!

welcome to Original

The project’s creator, the incomparable Bree Gary, wanted a world where the story revolves around the monsters. Where these epic beasts are more than scenery, waiting around to get stabbed once the hero finishes their training montage. These monsters aren’t just the protagonists: they’re in charge. Magical creatures made a world filled with (human) prey so they could stop feeding on and feuding with one another. Ever since, life’s been gravy.*

*It’s strongly advised that humans do not eat the gravy.**

**It’s strongly-er advised that humans do not visit The City, period.

stars of page and scream

The monsters themselves have been drawn from legends around the globe, some of them invented exclusively for Original. They reside within a place we call The City because its denizens came up with six different names and never managed to agree on which would be official. It will feel familiar and foreign at once, a mix of mundane and fantastical.

Its neighborhoods are drastically different each from the next, housing as they do such diverse residents as dryads, eldritch abominations, nephilim, and dragons. Each participating author has selected one monster, sometimes two, and will be writing a short story in which minotaurs or ghouls are the heroes. Assuming we use the term ‘hero’ loosely.

double, double

This only scratches the surface of the worldbuilding happening; with so many creative minds thrown in the pot, strange notions are constantly brewing.
